Here’s some fun news for your Friday: all of the Washington State Ferries have just gotten new names honoring the Mariners. So the next time you take a ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge or Vashon or wherever you’re headed (perhaps to Whidbey Island to visit the town from Practical Magic?) you may be able to say that you’re riding on the Juliooooooooooo.
Due to the Mariners currently being in the playoffs, Gov. Jay Inslee just signed an official proclamation on October 13 directing that the names of the Washington State Ferries be temporarily changed to honor the Seattle Mariners. “We are so proud of our Mariners for finally breaking our playoff drought and giving our fans the excitement of postseason baseball!” Inslee said.
There are 21 ferries in total and all are now sporting a new Mariner-inspired name. The names include Juliooooooooooo, Mariners “Good Vibes Only,” and Cal “Big Dumper” Raleigh.
You can see the full list of the ferries’ temporary new names at the WSDOT website.
As for how long the ferries will have their new names, it’s only temporary. The name changes will remain in effect for as long as the Mariners are in the playoffs and then revert back to normal.
