For their ninth annual ranking, U.S. News analyzed over 2,000 schools from nearly 100 countries using 13 key criteria that focused on the schools’ academic research and reputation. The criteria included indicators such as global research reputation, publications, and international collaboration.
In their analysis, U.S. News focused on universities’ global impact rather than criteria such as the on-campus experience, stating that, “Students can use these rankings to explore the higher education options that exist beyond their own countries’ borders and to compare key aspects of schools’ research missions.”
The other universities in the top 10 list included Harvard University, Stanford University, and University of Oxford. Ranked at number six globally with a score of 86.6, University of Washington sits on the list above Columbia University, University of Cambridge, California Institute of Technology, and Johns Hopkins University.
This ranking isn’t the first time this year that the university has acquired acclaim. Earlier this fall, University of Washington (or U-Dub, as it’s affectionately known by locals) was also recognized by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Out of 2,500 universities in the world, they ranked the University of Washington at number 17.
The reasons given by U.S. News for ranking University of Washington so highly included its highly-ranked graduate-level programs, its community-based medical education program, and its contribution to global research. “Research awards received by UW have topped $1 billion in recent years, and the school has more than 280 specialized research centers,” U.S. News notes in its ranking.
