If you wanted to do some in-store shopping at Nike here in Seattle, this week is your last chance. Nike announced the closure of their downtown Seattle store with a sign displayed on the door. The date of the store closure is Friday, January 20, 2023.
Read on for all the details.
The closure announcement came in the form of a sign displayed on the downtown Seattle store that simply read: “Closing 1/20/23. We look forward to serving you at nike.com.” Responses to the news on Twitter range from speculation that the closure is due to crime in the area to theories that Nike is transitioning to online retail or gearing up for its new store in Bellevue.
Nike has not publicly provided any reason for the closure of its Seattle store. We will update this post if they do.
The Downtown Seattle Association has been tracking downtown’s economic recovery since the COVID-19 pandemic and the closing of many downtown businesses in its wake. They reported that, “Nearly 2.2 million visitors came downtown in December, an increase of more than 8% compared to December 2021.” You can read more statistics about the current state of downtown Seattle by visiting the Downtown Seattle Association website.
Located at 6th Avenue and Pike Street, the downtown Seattle Nike store originally opened all the way back in 1996. There are currently no other brick-and-mortar Nike stores in Seattle. The closest Nike stores are now the Nike clearance store in Auburn and The Marketplace at Factoria in Bellevue. However, there are also plans for a new Nike store to open soon in Bellevue Square Mall.
