Going to a Halloween party in Seattle and in need of a costume? We have 10 fun ideas for you, and they’re all Seattle themed! Many of these costumes are pretty easy to put together with items you already own so if you need a last-minute costume idea this list may help.
Here are 10 Seattle-themed Halloween costume ideas:
1. The Fremont Troll
The Fremont Troll is a Seattle icon. As a bonus, this costume is pretty easy—if you already own some gray clothes, then you probably only have to buy three things.
What you’ll need:
- Gray face and body paint
- A gray beard
- Gray clothes
- A red toy VW Beetle
2. A Seattle Dog
A Seattle dog is a hot dog topped with cream cheese and caramelized onions, plus sometimes jalapeños and other condiments such as sriracha. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it—it’s actually delicious.
This costume can be a little expensive since you’ll probably have to buy a hot dog costume (unless you’re a DIY whiz). But once you have that, all you need is some creativity to make the Seattle-specific toppings out of construction paper, foam, paint, or whatever else works.
What you’ll need:
- A hot dog costume
- Faux onions and jalapeños
- A strip of faux cream cheese
3. The West Seattle Bridge
While not exactly topical anymore since the West Seattle Bridge is (thankfully) open again, this costume is still a good conversation-starter among Seattleites. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to pull off even at the last minute. All you need to do is DIY a sign to hang around your neck. Bonus points if you stick a bunch of toy cars to your pants or something.
What you’ll need:
- A black sign with “West Seattle Bridge closed” in orange letters
4. The Ghost of The Sonics
If you’ve been in Seattle for any length of time, you know how much we miss our NBA team the Supersonics. You can still find Sonics jerseys for sale online and in thrift stores, which makes this costume pretty easy.
Alternatively, you could pay homage to a player from a current Seattle sports team as long as you have the right jersey. Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird would make for an adorable sporty couples costume.
What you’ll need:
- A Supersonics jersey
- White or gray face and body paint
- A basketball (optional)
5. Squatch
This costume works on two levels: long-time Sonics fans will recognize you as the basketball team’s mascot Squatch, while those not in the know will just assume you’re a classic PNW Sasquatch. If you’re particularly hairy, you may not even need to buy the Sasquatch costume!
What you’ll need:
- A Supersonics jersey
- A Sasquatch costume
- A basketball (optional)
6. The Seattle Freeze
Does the Seattle Freeze really exist? That’s the fun debate that you’ll get to have all night when you show up dressed in this costume. (Although if you really want to commit, you should spend the night avoiding friendly conversation as well as eye contact.) You can wear any clothing you already own; this costume is all about the frosty makeup and accessories.
What you’ll need:
- Blue face and body paint
- Frosty hair/makeup
- Artificial icicles
7. Kurt Cobain
If you’re such a Nirvana fan that you’ve visited all these places in Seattle, this is the Halloween costume for you. Since you live in Seattle, you probably already have the appropriate grunge attire in your closet.
What you’ll need:
- Flannel or a cardigan
- Retro sunglasses
- A long blonde wig
- A guitar or microphone (optional)
8. Mount Rainier
If you dress as Mount Rainier (also known by its indigenous name Tahoma) you can announce your arrival at the party with, “The mountain is out!” You could also have fun threatening to erupt at people all night. This is definitely a DIY-heavy costume, unless you know of a store that sells stratovolcano costumes.
What you’ll need:
- A tent-like outfit in gray, brown, or dark green (a sheet with neck and arm holes would work, and you could attach a hula hoop to the inside of the hem to add shape)
- A white conical hat with flames or smoke attached to the top
9. The hiking enthusiast
This would make for a fun couples costume in conjunction with Mt. Rainier. It’s also a pretty easy last-minute Halloween costume, since most Seattleites probably already have all the hiking attire needed.
What you’ll need:
- Hiking boots (Birkenstocks and socks are also acceptable)
- A Patagonia fleece pullover or a Northface puffer
- A beanie
- A backpack or fanny pack
- Hiking poles
- A Starbucks cup
10. The Gum Wall
You’ll have a lot of fun grossing people out with this costume. Plus, think of all the bubblegum you’ll get to enjoy in the weeks leading up to Halloween! You could even bring some gum for people to chew and add to “the wall.” It’s basically an interactive art piece.
Just one tip: we don’t recommend putting any gum on the back of your costume if you plan on sitting down at any point.
What you’ll need:
- A wearable sandwich board (blank)
- Lots of used chewing gum in various colors stuck to the board
