It’s starting to seem like Seattle has no shortage of themed bars. First there was Carnelian Bay, the patio bar with a tropical sci-fi theme that just opened recently in Fremont. Now there’s the Admiral Benbow Room: a pirate-themed bar in West Seattle. The Benbow Room isn’t exactly new, however—it has a rich history that makes its reopening even more exciting for long-time Seattleites.

The Benbow Room has a storied past that reaches back to its original opening in the 1950s. Popular ’90s grunge band Mudhoney once filmed a music video there. After multiple ownership changes over the years, it most recently closed in 2019 after a stint as an old-school arcade. Now restaurateur Mark Fuller has taken command of the ship and is restoring the dive bar to its former glory, renaming it Admiral Benbow Room.
Admiral Benbow room opened its doors last week. Now you’ll find nightly DJ sets and games like pinball and skee-ball. Of course, there’s also plenty of pirate-themed decor that practically begs to be captured for your Instagram. One of its rooms resembles the interior of a Spanish galleon, so you’ll really feel like you’re drinking a pint inside a pirate ship.
Their menu offers more creative options than your typical dive bar. Swashbuckling cocktails and tropical slushies can be ordered at the bar, and there’s also a fun hot dog menu if you’re hungry (we recommend ordering the Sea Dog with its cream cheese, caramelized onions, and jalapenos if you want to prove to your friends that you’re a true Seattleite).
