Don’t miss your last chance to visit Museum of Museums in Seattle this August.
Sad news, Seattle: the small but mighty Museum of Museums is permanently closing its doors on September 1, 2023. This contemporary art center in First Hill opened in 2020 and survived the height of the COVID pandemic. Now, however, the museum is closing for good due to a plumbing issue.
Read on for all the details.
Museum of Museums is housed in what used to be a medical office building. The owner, Greg Lundgren, is citing a $120,000 repair estimate for the building’s pipes as the reason for the permanent closure of the museum. Without the repairs, parts of the museum will become flooded once Seattle’s rainy season starts.
You now have until September 1st to visit Museum of Museums, whether it’s for the first or the fifth time. If you haven’t been yet, you’re in for a treat. Even though the museum is short on space, it manages to use every inch of it in service of art. Even the museum’s bathrooms and gift shop are quirky works of art in and of themselves.
In addition to formal exhibitions, Museum of Museums also hosted weekly art classes, pop-ups, and even a weekend vintage market. The museum focused on showcasing and uplifting local artists.
If you’re on a budget, you can visit the museum for just $5 during the weekly Capitol Hill Art Walk on Thursdays. Kids under the age of 10 get in for free, and are sure to enjoy the museum’s colorful and playful contemporary installations and artworks.
As of now, there are no plans for Museum of Museums to reopen in some other capacity in the future. However, if that changes at any point we will be sure to share the news.
