January’s full Wolf Moon is nearly upon us, and you know what that means: time to watch out for werewolves in Seattle this weekend. Just kidding, of course. It actually means that we are in for a visual treat, as long as Seattle’s skies cooperate.
Read on for all the info about this viewing this month’s full Wolf Moon in Seattle!
What is the best time to view the Wolf Moon?
According to Forbes, “although January’s Moon turns full on Friday, January 6, 2023, it will be best viewed at moonrise the following evening on Saturday, January 7, 2023.” This is because the full moon rises before sunset on Friday, which will make it harder to enjoy the full spectacle.
So the key takeaway is to look for the Wolf Moon on Saturday between sunset and moonrise. In Seattle, Saturday’s sunset is at 4:34 p.m. and the moonrise is at 5:07 p.m.
Why is it called the Wolf Moon?
It is believed that January’s full moon got its name because of the howling of wolves. Originally people thought they were howling due to hunger, although now we know that wolves howl for many other reasons such as communication. Other common names for the January full moon include the Center Moon, the Ice Moon, the Cold Moon, the Snow Moon, and Moon After Yule.
When is the next full moon?
The next full moon isn’t until February 5. That full moon is dubbed “the Snow Moon.” Will it bring snowfall to Seattle in February? We’ll have to wait and see.
And remember: if you see someone this weekend with pale skin, overgrown hair, and a rather ferocious attitude, that is not a werewolf. That is simply a Seattleite suffering from seasonal affective disorder. Give them a coffee and they’ll be fine.
