Would you climb to the top of the Space Needle?
This October, brave Seattleites will be climbing the 832 steps to the top of the Space Needle for the annual Base 2 Space fundraiser. The proceeds from climbers’ registration fees and fundraising efforts will go towards Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. There’s still time to register and raise money if you’re interested!
Read on for all the important details!
Base 2 Space 2023 is on Sunday, October 1. There will be various prizes awarded to participants but even if you don’t win anything you get the satisfaction of helping a good cause. Below, see the answers to all your questions:
When is the registration deadline?
Online registration ends on Friday, September 29 at 11:59 p.m. You can register on-site on October 1 starting at 6:30 a.m. but keep in mind that your fundraising minimum is due along with the $89 registration fee before you can do the climb.
What is the fundraising minimum?
The fundraising minimum is $175 and is due at check-in on the event day. The registration fee does not count towards your fundraising minimum.
What ages can participate?
Ages 8 and up can climb, but keep in mind that those age 10 or under have to be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Babies in carriers and pets will not be allowed.
What is the climbing experience like?
The climbs are divided into different waves to stagger start times. You’ll climb up 98 flights of open-air stairs to ultimately reach 520 feet in the air. You can take breaks if needed but keep in mind that you will be timed. It usually takes the average climber about 20 to 30 minutes to reach the top, although top climbers have done it in as few as four to seven minutes! Once you reach the observation deck you can enjoy the view for as long as you want before taking the elevator back down.
What kinds of prizes will be awarded?
There will be two types of prizes: prizes for fundraisers and trophies for the fastest climbers. You’ll be eligible for prizes such as Taylor Swift tickets and Space Needle packages if you registered online and had the greatest number of unique donors of at least $5 by May 24. Also the top 10 individual fundraisers (plus two randomly-chosen participants) get the chance to climb the Space Needle’s spire this April.
You can also compete for a fastest-climber trophy. These will be awarded in male, female, and non-binary categories as well as in age categories. To compete for the top overall fastest climber you have to register for the Elite Wave climbing time.
Also, as long as supplies hold out every participant who finishes the climb gets a medal!
