There’s an incredible new way to see our great nation. The Great American Rail-Trail is connecting us from coast to coast in never before seen ways. It’s the nation’s first cross-country multi-use trail covering more than 3,700 miles in total. Luckily for us, the West Coast starting point is right here in Washington State.
Connecting trails
Since there are already so many existing rail-trails and greenways across the nation, the Great American Rail-Trail would be able to utilize them to complete the pathway much quicker. In fact, the project is already more than 55% complete. The largest trails organization in the country, Rail-to-Trails Conservancy’s (RTC), announced that around 50,000,000 Americans would be within 50 miles of the trail.
Cross-country connection
The trail traverses 12 different states plus the District of Columbia and creates a connective and accessible bike network unlike any other. The massive trail would pass through 150+ existing trails in Washington D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Washington State.
Calm cruising
The Great American Rail-Trail is perfect for cyclists who prefer to be removed from riding on busier roadways. The project’s aim is to have separated paths away from vehicle traffic, so all cyclists can be at ease while cruising around our lovely country.
“The Great American Rail-Trail offers something for everyone,” says Kevin Belle, project manager for Rails to Trails Conservancy. “This includes well-traveled, paved trails in an urban core to remote, unpaved trails that provide some one-on-one time with nature.”
Easily restock supplies
Plus, one of the major benefits of the Great American Rail-Trail is that resources are never that far out of reach. While many of the trails feature lovely peaceful scenery and can feel quite far from civilization, in actuality, the trails and paths frequently lead into towns where supplies can easily be procured. Additionally, it takes the worry out of preparing for these cycling trips since you’re never far from a store or garage in case you have gear issues, mechanical problems, or need to stock up on food or medical supplies.
A new view of America
The Great American Rail-Trail “promises an all-new American experience… an incomparable experience of exploring America’s heritage by trail—its potential, its beauty and bounty, its people and places.” Air up your tires. Strap on your helmet. Get ready to explore our breathtaking country in a whole new way.
