Book lovers and film fanatics in Seattle have a new reason to meet up at the movies. SIFF Book Club is a new bimonthly screening and meetup designed to bring Seattle’s bookworms and cinephiles together for an afternoon of reading, film, and conversation.
The format is simple: participants get two months to read a featured book before gathering at SIFF for a Sunday afternoon screening of its acclaimed film adaptation. Didn’t finish the book—or never picked it up? No problem. Everyone is welcome to attend the screening and join the discussion.
Each Book Club event also partners with a local bookstore, which will set up in the lobby with recommendations and additional titles connected to the featured book. After the movie, attendees can continue the conversation at The Traveling Goat for an informal Book Club discussion.
The series launches with Stephen King’s Carrie. Start reading the classic horror novel now, then head to SIFF Cinema Uptown on Sunday, October 11, at 3:30 p.m. for a 50th-anniversary screening of Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 adaptation. Movie tickets are $12.
Arrive early! Mercer Street Books will be in the lobby with a curated selection of books, while local artists Chloe Ladwig and Max B will offer prints, stickers, and more. Festival Senior Programmer Dan Doody will introduce the film and provide some context for the journey from page to screen.
Afterward, head to The Traveling Goat, a 21+ lounge known for eclectic cocktails, Asian fusion food, and tapas-style dishes, for the post-film discussion.
