We have exciting news, Seattle! The new and improved Pier 58 is opening on Friday, July 25. There will be an opening day celebration with local mascots from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. that is free for all ages. Marine-themed outfits are encouraged!
Read on for more details about the new Pier 58.
The new park space takes up 47,280 square feet (which translates into just over 10 NBA basketball courts!). The opening announcement on the Waterfront Seattle Instagram stated that “the pier contributes nearly 50,000 square feet of new park space to the reimagined 20-acre Waterfront Park.” As for the pier’s new triangular shape, it was designed to give passage to fish entering the migration corridor.
Here are a few highlights of what to expect at Pier 58:
- A play space with a 25-feet tall jellyfish play structure with an 18-foot tall slide.
- An open plaza and event space.
- A tree grove with six varieties of trees and shaded seating.
- An elevated lawn.
- Over 400 new plants.
- The restored historic bronze Waterfront Fountain.
- Marine habitat improvements for fish and marine life.
The official Waterfront Seattle Instagram described Pier 58 thusly:
Soon you will be able to play on the whimsical jellyfish-inspired climbing tower, relax on an elevated lawn and at the shaded tree grove, participate in various activities in the plaza thanks to our partners at Friends of Waterfront Park, and enjoy the incredible views of Elliott Bay and the Olympic mountains.
The original Pier 58 was removed in 2021. The recreation of Pier 58 is just one part of the many recent improvements made to the Seattle waterfront. These include the Overlook Walk, the Park Promenade and bike path, and the Waterfront Park Market.
We can’t wait to check out Pier 58 and play on the giant jellyfish when it opens at 4:00 p.m. on July 25! You’ll find the pier right next to the Seattle Aquarium.
