The Emerald City just got a pretty big global shoutout.
Seattle ranks No. 4 in the 2026 Global Cities Index from Oxford Economics, putting it ahead of cities such as Tokyo, Zurich, San Francisco, and Boston. Only New York, London, and Paris ranked higher.
The annual index looks at 1,000 of the world’s largest cities, measuring five areas: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance. Together, those scores are used to gauge not just how cities are doing today, but where they appear to be headed.
Seattle scored 92.8 overall, placing it in the top 5% of cities worldwide.
Economically, Seattle was especially strong, ranking No. 4 globally with a score of 89.8. The city also landed in the top 5% for human capital, quality of life and environment. Its governance score was lower at 75.7, ranking No. 198 and placing Seattle in the top 20% in that category.
The report also points to some of the things locals already know well. Seattle’s arts scene, including the Seattle Art Museum, helped boost its quality-of-life credentials, as did the city’s deep musical legacy—from grunge pioneers like Nirvana and Pearl Jam to the broader culture that grew around them.
The city’s waterfront transformation also gets a nod. The recently completed 20-acre Waterfront Park replaced a former highway with public space, walking paths, bike lanes and new community piers, all with views of Puget Sound.
So while Seattle may be known for tech, coffee, and rain, the 2026 index suggests its global appeal is much broader: a strong economy, rich culture, beautiful natural surroundings, and overall high quality of life all put our city at the top of the list.
