Seattle Parks and Recreation is bringing back Big Day of Play on Saturday, August 15, with an afternoon packed with free activities, live entertainment, sports and plenty of ways to get out and meet your neighbors.
The annual celebration runs from noon to 5 p.m. at two nearby locations: Rainier Playfield and the Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center.
A free shuttle will run between the two sites throughout the event, making it easy to check out both.
There’s something for just about every age and interest. Families can find bouncy houses, inflatable obstacle courses, arts and crafts, agility games and sports clinics, while adults can browse a community resource fair featuring more than 50 local organizations and businesses. Food trucks and community vendors will also be on hand.
Sports are a major part of the day. Visitors can watch or join basketball tournaments, tennis and pickleball games, wheelchair soccer and basketball, and other athletic activities. Tennis and pickleball courts at Rainier Playfield will offer instruction and open play from noon to 5 p.m., with all skill levels welcome. A free racket giveaway is scheduled for 2 to 2:30 p.m.
The fun starts before noon with the Big Day of Play Fun Run. The one-mile route begins at Lakewood Playground at 11:30 a.m. and ends at Rainier Playfield. Walkers are welcome, and participants will receive a free swag bag.
Over at the Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center, attendees can try free water activities, including paddleboarding, kayaking, rowing and sailing. Free sailboat rides, plus life-jacket fittings and giveaways, will also be available.
Back at Rainier, the Main Stage and Block Party will feature local artists and cultural groups, along with face painting, henna art, animal mask-making and a Seattle Animal Shelter booth with adoptable dogs.
If you’d like to get active outside in Seattle this weekend, take advantage of the free admission and free shuttle and check out Big Day of Play.
