What’s hiding beneath the ocean’s surface? At Pacific Science Center, visitors can soon explore that question through Mysteries from the Deep: Exploring Underwater Archaeology, a new all-ages exhibit opening October 2.
Included with general admission, the exhibit takes visitors below the waves to explore shipwrecks, lost cities and submerged landscapes from around the world. The exhibit explores fascinating submerged histories, including Pavlopetri, one of the world’s oldest known submerged cities. Along the way, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how archaeologists use science and technology to uncover stories that have been hidden underwater for centuries.
There’s plenty of hands-on exploration, too. Guests can reconstruct digital dive sites, operate a robotic submersible, and examine 3D scans of archaeological discoveries. Visitors can also learn about preserving underwater artifacts and the important role communities play in protecting cultural heritage.
One of the exhibit’s highlights is the Underwater Archaeology Lab, where visitors can experiment with authentic archaeological tools and learn how technologies such as sonar, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), artificial intelligence and photogrammetry are changing the way underwater discoveries are studied.
And if you’re a PacSci member, you’ll get an early chance to explore. Members are invited to a special preview morning on October 3 from 8–10 a.m., before the exhibit opens to the general public.
The traveling exhibition is co-produced by Flying Fish and the Intrepid Museum, bringing a mix of archaeology, history, and cutting-edge technology to Seattle for a limited time.
