A ZIP code in Washington state has emerged as one of the most in-demand destinations for movers in the United States. According to a recent study by MovingPlace analyzing nearly 500,000 relocation moves, Redmond’s 98052 ZIP code ranked second nationwide for total move volume in February, with 243 recorded moves.
Redmond’s popularity is largely tied to its strong connection to the tech industry. The city is home to major employers, including Microsoft, and continues to attract a growing number of technology professionals. This has made the area especially appealing for corporate relocations, contributing to a steady influx of new residents.
Researchers noted that this surge may signal a renewed trend. Migration into Seattle’s suburban areas, which slowed between 2022 and 2023, appears to be picking up again. Redmond’s appearance in the national top 10 for the first time highlights its rising prominence as a relocation hub.
The study measured “hotness” in two ways: moves per capita and total move volume. While moves per capita show how intense migration is relative to population size, total volume reflects the overall scale of movement. This helps identify areas that play a major role in broader migration patterns, even if they are not the most densely impacted.
Economic factors also help explain Redmond’s appeal. The median household income in the area is about $163,500, and the median home price exceeds $1.3 million, reflecting both affluence and strong housing demand.
Although Redmond ranked highly, it narrowly missed the top spot. Washington, D.C.’s 20002 ZIP code claimed first place, surpassing Redmond by just 34 moves.
Texas cities dominated much of the remaining top 10, while a few others from Arizona and Florida also made the list.
