On April 16, FRS Clipper unveiled its new whale-watching vessel, the Emerald Clipper, with a ceremonial launch. The boat was officially christened with the traditional bottle-breaking against the hull before setting off on a brief maiden voyage across Elliott Bay. The debut marks a key moment in FRS Clipper’s 40th anniversary celebrations this year.
In addition to operating its well-known fast ferry service to Victoria, B.C., FRS Clipper offers the only whale-watching tour departing directly from downtown Seattle. Running seasonally from May through early November, these excursions are led by expert naturalists who help guests spot orcas along with bald eagles, seals, and other marine wildlife. Whale sightings are guaranteed—if none are seen, passengers receive a complimentary future tour. In the waters of the Salish Sea, it’s possible to encounter orcas, humpback whales, gray whales, and more.

The Emerald Clipper itself is a 103-foot, state-of-the-art catamaran designed to maximize both comfort and viewing opportunities. It features two covered outdoor decks and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows—the largest ever installed on a regional whale-watching vessel. Onboard amenities include a galley serving hot meals and a dedicated naturalist station where guests can learn more about the region’s rich marine ecosystem. The vessel also increases capacity and efficiency: cruising at over 32 knots, it can operate two sailings per day and accommodate up to 300 passengers, while being more than 50% more fuel-efficient than its predecessor. The Emerald Clipper was built locally in Washington by Mavrik Marine Inc. in La Conner.
For those eager to head out on the water, the Emerald Clipper is now open for booking, with its first commercial sailing scheduled for May 1. Daily tours begin May 21 for the summer season, with additional afternoon departures running from June 12 through September 27.
