Did you know about free rowboat rentals at Lake Union?
This is a hidden gem of an activity in Seattle, but we’re here to share the good news. The Center for Wooden Boats at Lake Union offers free one-hour rowboat rentals every day, year-round! Read on for all the details.
Originally, volunteer crews would take passengers out to Lake Union for the popular free Sunday Public Sail. It was a Seattle tradition for more than 25 years. Post-COVID, however, the Center for Wooden Boats is offering free rowboat rentals in lieu of Sunday Public Sail. Their motto is that everyone should have access to maritime heritage.
At the Center, you’ll find a fleet of beautifully maintained rowboats available. The best part is that no experience is required to rent them. If you’re nervous about going out on the water for the first time, don’t worry: they have helpful and friendly staff available to ensure you’re set up for success.
The rowboat rentals are available via the Center’s Public Peapod Program, which operates year-round on Wednesdays through Sundays. The boats hold up to four adults and one child. This is a great family-friendly activity, as well as a fun and unexpected date idea.
We recommend that you get there 15 minutes before your reservation. Keep in mind that there are no restrooms available to the public. Don’t forget to take warm clothes with you and wear the required life jackets for your own safety.
Ready to row out? Reserve your rowboat rental online. Rentals must be reserved in advance. The Center opens a new week of availability every Sunday night, and you can book two to three weeks in advance. The program does tend to fill up quickly so check back every Sunday night to snag a spot.
