If you’ve been relying on SEA Spot Saver to breeze through airport security, your days with the tool are numbered. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has announced that the program will end on November 30, 2026.
Reservations made before November 29 will still be honored at TSA Checkpoint 4, so existing bookings won’t be left in the lurch, but no new ones will carry beyond that date.
What is SEA Spot Saver?
Launched in 2021, SEA Spot Saver was a free, no-membership-required tool that let travelers reserve a time slot at a dedicated security lane at SEA, available daily from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. The program was designed as a short-term fix for a very specific problem: SEA (also fondly referred to as Sea-Tac by locals) is the 11th busiest airport in the country, yet it’s considerably smaller than the ten airports ranked above it. That size constraint led to some notoriously long checkpoint lines, and Spot Saver gave passengers a way to manage their wait while the airport worked on longer-term infrastructure solutions.
Why is Spot Saver ending?
Simply put: the airport fixed the underlying problem. Under the UpgradeSEA program, SEA opened a new Checkpoint 1 and a redesigned Checkpoint 6 in 2025. Both checkpoints feature more lanes and updated screening technology. The result was an improvement in throughput: the airport says that over 94% of travelers now clear security in 20 minutes or less.
With lines moving that efficiently, Spot Saver usage dropped sharply. In a comment on the Seattle Reddit page, Port Commissioner Sam Cho pointed to a rise in “ghost bookings” — travelers reserving a slot as a backup, then simply walking through a regular lane when they arrive and find it moving quickly. That pattern left staff stationed at dedicated Spot Saver lanes with few, if any, passengers to serve, while the program continued to rack up costs in staffing and back-end software. “You could say that Spot Saver is a victim of our own success,” Cho said.
He also noted that the program could be revived if wait times deteriorate again in the future.
What are your alternatives?
Going forward, a few tools can help you manage your time at SEA checkpoints. The airport’s live wait time tracker is available online in addition to digital signage throughout the terminal. You can also download the free flySEA app (available on iOS and Android) to check conditions before you leave for the airport. For frequent flyers, enrolling in TSA PreCheck® or CLEAR+ is a reliable way to move through security faster on a consistent basis. Travelers with questions are urged to reach out directly to SEA Customer Care.
