Washington state continues to stand out for its environmental efforts, earning a top-five spot in the latest “greenest states” ranking from WalletHub. The annual report evaluates all 50 states across 28 metrics designed to measure environmental performance and sustainability.
To determine the rankings, WalletHub grouped data into three main categories: Environmental Quality, Eco-Friendly Behaviors, and Climate-Change Contributions. Each state received a score in these areas, which were then combined into an overall weighted average.
Washington performed especially well in eco-conscious habits, ranking No. 4 nationwide for Eco-Friendly Behaviors. The state also placed 10th in Climate-Change Contributions and 12th in Environmental Quality. Together, these results secured Washington the No. 5 position overall.
The report also highlighted specific areas where Washington excels. It ranks fifth in the nation for LEED-certified buildings per capita, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainable construction. Additionally, Washington tied for first place in renewable energy consumption, sharing the top spot with South Dakota, Iowa, Maine, and Oregon.
Topping the list overall was Vermont, which stood out for its high amount of organic farmland per capita, low greenhouse gas emissions, and strong network of alternative fuel stations. Washington followed behind Hawaii, California, and New York in the final rankings.
