The U District Street Fair returns this May for its 55th year, once again launching Seattle’s summer event season with a lively, 15-block celebration along University Way NE. Spanning two days, the fair transforms the heart of the University District into a vibrant hub of arts, food, and music, drawing over 90,000 visitors each year. For 2026, the U District Street Fair will run from Saturday, May 16 through Sunday, May 17.
What began in 1970 as a modest “U District Sidewalk Fair” has grown into one of the longest-running festivals of its kind west of the Mississippi. Founded by local entrepreneur Andy Shiga, the event was originally intended to bring the community together during a time of cultural and political change. Its early days featured simple blanket-and-stoop vending alongside free live music—elements that remain central to the fair’s spirit today.
Now stretching from NE Campus Parkway to NE 50th Street, the event showcases hundreds of vendors offering handmade crafts, vintage goods, and unique finds. Local small businesses also join in, spilling out onto the sidewalks with outdoor displays of art, clothing, and more.
Food is a major highlight, with over 50 food trucks, booths, and restaurants participating. Three dedicated food courts—along with street-side patios and beer gardens—offer everything from quick bites to full meals, creating a festive dining atmosphere throughout the fair.
Live entertainment anchors the experience, with free performances on the Neptune Main Stage featuring indie rock, alternative acts, and local Seattle talent. Music runs from late morning through early evening each day, with additional performers scattered across the festival.
Easily accessible via Link light rail to NE 43rd Street, this free, family- and dog-friendly event welcomes everyone—rain or shine—to celebrate community, creativity, and the unofficial start of summer in Seattle.
