Seattle’s historic Shafer Baillie Mansion is getting a new chapter next year. The 113-year-old property on Capitol Hill’s Millionaire’s Row, just steps from Volunteer Park, is set to become The Baillie: a boutique hotel and restaurant from local hospitality duo Jake Santelli and Julian Hagood.
The mansion, located at 14th Ave E and Aloha Street, was previously operated as a bed and breakfast before selling for $4.9 million earlier this year. Former owners Ana Lena Melka and Mark Mayhle spent years restoring the 11,000-square-foot mansion, preserving its original mahogany and oak woodwork, vintage light fixtures, and intricate tile details while converting the old third-floor ballroom into guest suites.
Now Santelli and Hagood, the married partners behind Harry’s Good Times Co., are taking over the landmark property with plans to create a larger-scale hospitality destination. The pair already operate Capitol Hill’s Harry’s Fine Foods, West Seattle seafood spot Harry’s Beach House, and the small-scale Harry’s Guest House (also in Capitol Hill). But even for them, this project is a leap. As they joked in their Instagram announcement, “It’s like the size of 17 Harry’s Fine Foods!”
Plans for The Baillie have been under review with the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections since last fall as the project moves through the city’s formal change-of-use process. Once approved, the restaurant and hotel will bring an unusual kind of gathering place to one of Seattle’s most residential and historically protected neighborhoods.
That community-focused vision is central to the project. The Baillie’s website describes it as a rare third place for the largely residential Millionaire’s Row: “Spaces throughout to gather. Designed for lingering meals, late nights, and a sense of belonging.”
If all goes according to plan, The Baillie will open in summer 2027 at 907 14th Ave E.
