Looking for a fun summer event near Seattle this weekend? The Pierce County Kite Festival is the perfect excuse for an easy day trip from Seattle. Held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, the free event takes place at Chambers Creek Regional Park’s Central Meadow—only about an hour’s drive south of Seattle.
The festival centers on the simple joy of flying kites, with kite demonstrations alongside plenty of space for families and visitors to launch their own. You’re encouraged to bring your own kite, but if you don’t own one you can purchase one at the event for $5. Organizers are offering $5 build-your-own kite kits, which can be reserved online ahead of time and assembled at the park. Those hoping to snag a free kite should plan to arrive early: the Pierce County Kitefliers Association will give away 250 kites while supplies last.
