Sue Bird is being honored for her many contributions to the Seattle Storm over the years. On Monday the city of Seattle and Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell honored the WNBA legend by renaming part of a street after the former Seattle Storm star. Fittingly the street leads up to Climate Pledge Arena and that section of Second Ave North will now be known as “Sue Bird Court.”
Bird is beloved by Seattle for her many successes during her incredible career with the Seattle Storm. She spent two decades with the Storm. She was their No. 1 overall pick in 2002, and she successfully retired after the 2022 season.
She won four titles with the franchise and earned 13 All-Star nods during her time with the team. Bird averaged 11.7 points and 5.6 assists per game throughout her career. She’s also the league’s all-time assist leader with more than 3,200. Her jersey was retired by the Storm last season.
While Bird now has a home in New York City, she’s passionate about keeping Seattle as her forever home. She joined the Seattle Storm’s ownership group earlier this year.
“I’ve always loved and cherished playing here in Seattle. This city will forever be a part of me and that’s why I am so thankful and honored today,” Bird said in a statement. “When I think back on my time with the Storm — the people I’ve met, the memories I’ve made, the impact this franchise has had off the court, and of course, the championships we’ve won on the court — I’m reminded that some achievements don’t come and go, they don’t get broken, they last forever. That’s what makes today so special is that I get to add to that list with something that is going to last forever.”
