Looking for an exciting way to welcome the new year? Take the plunge—literally—at the annual Seattle Polar Bear Plunge! This free, all-ages event returns to Matthews Beach at noon on Thursday, January 1, 2026. No need to register in advance, but there are a few key things to know before you brave the icy waters.
Keep reading for all the must-know info!
While the official plunge happens right at noon, you can usually expect some pre-plunge fun and warm drinks available afterward. For younger participants—or anyone who prefers a little more breathing room—there’s also a Cubs Plunge at 11:45 a.m. Feeling bold? You’re welcome to join both (or as Seattle Parks and Recreation put it, “For the truly hearty, double-dipping is allowed”).
Lifeguards will be on duty to help keep everyone safe. Before you head in, be sure to review these safety tips from Seattle Parks and Recreation:
- Check with your doctor beforehand if you have heart conditions or other health concerns.
- Don’t stay in the water longer than 15 minutes.
- Skip the alcohol— it increases the risk of hypothermia.
- Stay dressed and warm until the moment you plunge, and change into dry clothes immediately after.
Feeling festive? Costumes are encouraged! Water shoes or sandals are also a good idea since the beach can be rocky. And above all, pack plenty of dry clothing for after your icy dip—especially warm socks.
If you participate in this year’s polar plunge, you’ll earn more than bragging rights. Those who manage a full (aka neck-deep) immersion in the lake will get a 2026 Commemorative Badge of Courage as a free memento for your chilly achievement.
The Seattle Polar Bear Plunge tradition began in 2003, thanks to Janet Wilson, Aquatic Center Coordinator at Meadowbrook Pool. About 300 adventurous Seattleites showed up that first year, and today the event regularly draws around 2,000 participants.
