With baseball season in full swing and the World Cup coming to Seattle this June, chances are high you’ll be picking up takeout for a watch party this summer. Pizza is traditionally a favorite game day pick, but in Seattle, it’s becoming a pretty expensive tradition.
New data from Bovada Sportsbook found Seattle ranks fifth among major U.S. cities for the highest average price of a large cheese pizza. After comparing prices from 750 restaurants across the 50 largest cities in the country, the study found Seattleites are paying about $23.84 per pie on average. The data points to an ongoing trend of everyday dining costs climbing in the Emerald City.
Only four cities ranked higher than Seattle when it comes to the cost of pizza takeout. San Jose took the top spot with an average pizza price of $25.72, followed by San Francisco at $25.22. New York, known for its pizza more than any other U.S. city, came in third at $24.95. Just ahead of Seattle was its sister city Portland in fourth place, where the average large cheese pizza costs $24.73.
On the flip side, some cities are still serving up much cheaper slices. El Paso ranked as the most affordable city in the study, with pizzas there averaging just $14.54. Texas cities dominated the lower end of the rankings overall, with Fort Worth ($16.40) and Dallas ($16.59) both landing among the country’s cheapest spots for takeout pizza.
Seattle has no shortage of great pizza options, from flashy newcomers like Moto Pizza and Roma Roma to beloved classics like Pagliacci. But if you want to take home a pie, prepare to pay a premium.
