Looking for a fun, free event in Seattle this summer? How about getting out on the water and vibing to a DJ? Seattle Paddle Rave bills itself as “informal floating gatherings in Lake Union accompanied by house music.” The next event will be on the evening of Monday, August 18—and free tickets are available now!
Read on for all the details!
Seattle Paddle Rave was born out of Erik Hillesheim’s passion for music and the outdoors. He adopted paddle boarding as a hobby after moving to Seattle. Then he had the idea for the event earlier this summer.
“Boats do these sort of tie-up parties but not everyone can own a boat,” Hillesheim explained in an Instagram Reel. “So how could we bring that same idea to a group of paddle boarders?”
The first Seattle Paddle Rave on July 4th unexpectedly drew over 100 paddle boarders. People heard about it via word of mouth and social media. The Seattle Paddle Rave Instagram now has over 10,000 followers.
“We are clearly scratching an itch of a way people wanted to experience nature and music that they hadn’t before,” said Hillesheim about the response.
Due to the initial large turnout, Hillesheim had to get permits and liability insurance for following events. Some of the costs had to come out of his own pocket in pursuit of keeping the event free for all to attend. For those who able, donations of $10 to $15 will help keep the paddle rave going. Future events will be held on different days of the week to be accessible for everyone’s schedules.
It’s important to note that there are a few guidelines for participants. Tickets are free but registering for one helps the organizers know how many people to expect. Everyone needs to have a life vest on board at all times. You also should be careful to mind the zone, keeping paths clear for water traffic. Kayaks are welcome as well as paddle boards. Finally, this is an alcohol/cannabis-free event.
