Seattle Ballooning will once again illuminate Green Lake’s shoreline for one evening only this December for the annual Pathway of Lights celebration. This will be the fifth year that glowing hot air balloons will join the Pathway of Lights, although sometimes the weather has kept the balloons grounded. This free community event will be on Saturday, December 13, 2025, with balloons expected to inflate around 4:30 p.m. and glow until 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Each December for Green Lake Pathway of Lights, thousands of Seattleites walk the 2.8-mile Green Lake loop, which is illuminated after dark with candlelit luminaries. This year’s display will include five of Seattle Ballooning’s full-size hot air balloons, thanks to a partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation. Each hot air balloon is nearly eight stories tall.
Spectators will be able to stroll among the glowing balloons, meet the pilots, and learn about the mechanics of flight. The massive balloons are illuminated from within by propane burners that create rhythmic bursts of light. The event also typically has complimentary refreshments and live music performances.
Seattle Ballooning’s most recent event at Seattle Center in June drew more than 15,000 people! If you missed out on that event, this is another great opportunity to see the hot air balloons, especially if you have kids in tow. The Green Lake glow will offer a similar visual spectacle but at an earlier hour, making it more accessible for families.

This event is free and for all ages; no RSVP required. Keep in mind that parking near Green Lake will be limited. If you plan to attend, get there via rideshares, bike, or public transit if possible. And remember to dress for the weather!
Green Lake Pathway of Lights is rain or shine, but inclement weather may cause the balloon glow portion to be cancelled. You can see the Seattle Ballooning Instagram for timely updates.
