Seattle’s creative community will take center stage this August as the Seattle Design Festival returns for its 16th year, bringing interactive installations, workshops, talks, and networking events to locations across the city. Best of all, most of the festival is free!
The festival’s signature event is the Block Party, happening August 15 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Lake Union Park in South Lake Union. Free and open to the public, the two-day street fair invites visitors to explore how design influences everyday life through immersive experiences built around this year’s theme, IN[FLUX]. The theme reflects a city in transition, embracing movement, change, and possibility while highlighting the role design can play in shaping Seattle’s future.
One of the biggest draws of the festival Block Party is the collection of Built Installations: temporary, large-scale structures created by members of the design community. More than eye-catching displays, these installations encourage collaboration and community engagement through interactive elements that incorporate touch, sound, and visual experiences.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can also drop into Popup Experiences, which range from 30-minute sessions to two-hour workshops. Expect hands-on art projects, interactive learning opportunities, and other creative activities happening throughout the park. Some experiences are scheduled, while others invite attendees to simply wander and discover something unexpected.
The festival’s Mainstage will feature talks, demonstrations, and performances from designers, filmmakers, educators, and other creative leaders. Sessions include topics such as Trash to Temptation: Making Sustainable Fashion Hard to Ignore and Echos: The Heroes Around You in VR, blending practical ideas with storytelling and innovation.
The festival continues after hours with free Design Mixers hosted at partner venues around Seattle. Registration is required, but the events offer an opportunity to connect with fellow design enthusiasts in relaxed settings. For example, the Create Now Seattle x SDF Mixer focuses on building creative skills using the latest updates in Photoshop, Illustrator, Firefly, and other Adobe tools.
The festival wraps up with a Closing Party on August 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. at LMN’s The Shop in Pioneer Square. This ticketed evening brings together festival attendees, partners, and organizers for music, light bites, and community connection.
