Seattle’s summer calendar is packed with neighborhood garage sales, giving bargain hunters plenty of chances to explore different parts of the city while searching for unique finds. If you missed the popular annual West Seattle Garage Sale Day in May, there’s another long-running neighborhood tradition coming up in Capitol Hill.
The Capitol Hill Garage Sale returns on Sunday, August 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Cal Anderson Park. Now in its seventeenth year, the event has grown into Seattle’s longest-running community-wide garage sale, drawing more than 150 sellers to the park each year while dozens of additional residents host sales at homes throughout the neighborhood.
This year’s event is expected to be one of the largest yet, with a record number of vendors registered to sell in Cal Anderson Park. Shoppers can browse everything from household goods and vintage treasures to clothing, books, and collectibles in the park before venturing into the surrounding neighborhood for individual yard sales, where an online map will highlight participating garage and sidewalk sales.
Visitors can also pair their shopping trip with a stop at the nearby Capitol Hill Farmers Market on Barbara Bailey Way, which will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Food, drinks, and live amplified music in the park are expected to add to the day’s atmosphere.
For those planning to attend, Cal Anderson Park is easily accessible by Link light rail, the Seattle Streetcar, and several Metro bus routes, making transit one of the easiest ways to reach the event. Sellers should note that parking around the park is limited to on-street spaces, so arranging help for loading and unloading is recommended.
The Capitol Hill Garage Sale began nearly 17 years ago as a volunteer-led effort to bring neighbors together in a community with many apartment residents while activating an underused public space. Today, the annual event continues to serve as a neighborhood gathering that encourages reuse, recycling, and community connections through a day of treasure hunting and meeting neighbors.
