Visitors planning a trip to Olympic National Park in 2026 should be aware of a major seasonal disruption affecting one of its most popular coastal destinations. The Rialto Beach closure 2026 will significantly impact access during peak travel months, requiring careful planning and flexibility.
Located along the park’s rugged Pacific coastline, Rialto Beach is known for its dramatic sea stacks, driftwood-strewn shorelines, and proximity to the Quillayute River. However, from July 8 through October 5, 2026, the beach will be completely inaccessible due to major construction on Mora Road—the only route leading to the area. During this time, no vehicles, bicycles, or even pedestrian traffic will be allowed beyond the Mora Campground, effectively cutting off all access.
The closure is necessary to repair long-standing damage caused by severe flooding in 2019, when the Quillayute River eroded a critical section of Mora Road near milepost 1.25. While temporary reinforcements have held up in recent years, a permanent solution is now underway to protect the roadway from future flooding and shifting riverbanks.
Leading up to the full closure, visitors can expect delays between April and July 7, when construction will reduce traffic to a single lane near the damaged section. Notably, work will pause over the Fourth of July weekend to accommodate holiday travelers.
Despite the inconvenience, travelers to the Olympic Peninsula still have excellent alternatives. Nearby spots like Ruby Beach offer similarly stunning views, tide pools, and iconic sea stacks.
If you’re visiting Olympic National Park this summer or early fall, plan ahead, check conditions regularly, and be ready with a “Plan B” to make the most of your coastal adventure. You can find more information and updates on NPS.gov.
