Looking for a scenic summer getaway from Seattle? According to Architectural Digest, one of Washington’s most picture-perfect destinations is only three hours away from the Emerald City.
The magazine recently revealed its picks for the prettiest town in every state, highlighting places that combine beautiful scenery with plenty of local character. As Architectural Digest explains, narrowing it down wasn’t easy: with everything from tree-lined Northeast towns to unforgettable West Coast beaches and charming Midwestern communities, choosing a single standout in each state was no small task. Instead, the editors focused on towns that are both visually stunning and rich in culture.
For Washington, the honor went to Friday Harbor.
Located on San Juan Island in the San Juan Islands, Friday Harbor is known for its mild climate, with the occasional stretch of classic Pacific Northwest drizzle mixed with plenty of pleasant weather. Getting there from Seattle is part of the adventure. You can arrive by ferry or even hop on a seaplane.
Once you step off the ferry, you’ll find a charming, historic seaport that’s easy to explore on foot. Cozy shops, local restaurants, galleries, and museums are all within walking distance of the ferry landing, making it a perfect car-free escape. If you want to venture farther, shuttle buses, a seasonal trolley, plus bike and moped rentals make getting around the island simple. You can also catch an inter-island ferry to Lopez, Orcas, or Shaw Island.
Of course, you could easily spend your entire trip right in Friday Harbor. The town is especially popular for its water adventures, from whale watching tours and guided fishing charters to kayaking through scenic coves and boating along the coastline while spotting the area’s incredible marine wildlife. Back on land, there’s plenty of time to browse downtown boutiques, visit local galleries and museums, or settle in for a leisurely meal at one of the town’s charming restaurants.
Whether you’re planning a quick getaway or a multi-island adventure, it’s easy to see why Architectural Digest picked Friday Harbor as Washington’s prettiest town.
