Now that April has arrived, it’s time to celebrate spring with one of our favorite annual traditions: getting free ice cream. The annual Free Cone Day is back on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at participating Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop locations in the Seattle area. This promotion takes place every spring worldwide as a way of saying thank you to their customers.

Free Cone Day started more than 40 years ago in 1979. Ice cream shop cofounders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield wanted to celebrate their first year of business in Vermont and say thanks to the community. They came up with the idea of giving out unlimited free scoops of ice cream for one day. The annual tradition has continued ever since.
It’s a day of gratitude and giving back. “Some participating Scoop Shops will also partner with a local nonprofit in their communities, who often benefit from much of the energy around Free Cone Day,” Ben & Jerry’s shared in a statement.
This promotion is unique because of its lack of restrictions. Not only do customers get to choose between a cone and a cup, but in the past customers were allowed to get essentially unlimited free scoops as long as they got back in line. We were unable to confirm this policy for 2025 but if you want seconds and have time to wait in line twice, give it your best shot!
Although it’s called Free Cone Day, if you prefer to get your scoop in a cup that’s an option! Every flavor on the Scoop Shop menu will be available in either a cone or a cup on April 8, including non-dairy flavors. See the Scoop Shop ice cream flavors here so you can plan in advance.
This Tuesday, April 8 you can get your free ice cream at the following Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop locations in Seattle:
- 7900 East Green Lake Dr N Suite 104 (Green Lake)
- 166 Bellevue Way NE (Bellevue Square)
- 176 Lake St S (Kirkland)
Note that the Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop located at MoPOP does not participate in Free Cone Day.
