Looking for an October getaway with ocean views, fresh seafood, and fall foliage in Washington? Chuckanut Drive offers all three, making this scenic coastal route a must-see autumn escape less than two hours from Seattle.
Often drawing comparisons to California’s Big Sur, Chuckanut Drive follows State Route 11 along sandstone cliffs overlooking Samish Bay. The 21-mile State Route 11 scenic drive connects Burlington and Bellingham, winding through evergreen forests, red alders, golden bigleaf maples, and pockets of larch trees. Along the way, sweeping views of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands make for incredible fall photos.
October is an especially good time for seafood lovers to experience Chuckanut Drive because autumn foliage overlaps with oyster season. Stop at Taylor Shellfish Farm’s Samish Oyster Bar and Shellfish Market in Bow for freshly shucked oysters and shellfish straight from the bay. For an elevated dining experience, the nearby Oyster Bar is another popular option; it’s located right on Chuckanut Drive, 20 minutes south of Bellingham.
You can also check out the Festival of Family Farms, held at participating farms throughout the Skagit Valley in October. Depending on the activities offered, visitors can learn about local farming, meet producers, and discover how shellfish farming supports clean-water practices.
Once you reach Bellingham, take time to explore Fairhaven, a historic waterfront neighborhood packed with character. Its red-brick buildings, independent shops, cozy cafes, and walkable streets make it an ideal stop for a leisurely afternoon—and Chuckanut Drive takes you right there. You’ll also find waterfront hotels and beautiful views of Bellingham Bay.
While planning your adventure, keep in mind that construction-related closures are scheduled to affect portions of Larrabee State Park, including campgrounds and main day-use areas. The construction started in September 16 and will continue through May 2027. Clayton Beach, Lost and Fragrance Lake trails, the boat launch, and the Interurban Trail are all listed as remaining open. Check current park updates before visiting.
