Summer road trip season is officially here, and if you’re looking to get out of Seattle for a weekend—or dodge some of the city’s World Cup crowds—you’re not alone. Washington has no shortage of incredible summer destinations, and now two local cities are getting national recognition for it.
USA Today just released its list of the best summer destinations of 2026, with winners chosen by readers after nominations from a panel of travel experts. Surprisingly, Seattle didn’t make the cut. Neither did Tacoma. Instead, Spokane landed at #8, while Bellevue claimed the #10 spot.
Spokane earned praise for its mix of outdoor adventure, arts, and affordability. USA Today called Spokane a “hidden gem,” especially when comparing its affordability next to the higher costs often associated with western Washington. Summer is when the city really comes alive, thanks to Riverfront Park—the legacy of the 1974 World’s Fair—which hosts outdoor concerts and festivals throughout the season. Visitors can also check out the 40-mile paved Spokane River Centennial Trail or hop on the SkyRide over the falls. Add in a thriving farm-to-table dining scene and the popular First Friday art walk, and it’s easy to see the appeal. Spokane also makes a great jumping-off point for exploring nearby nature spots like Coeur d’Alene Lake and the Channeled Scablands.
Bellevue, meanwhile, got recognition as a calmer alternative to Seattle—especially timely as World Cup visitors are expected to flood the Emerald City this summer. USA Today says Bellevue “delivers big-city polish without the hustle and bustle.” Summer visitors can enjoy waterfront parks, boating, shopping, and outdoor dining, along with easy access to hiking and kayaking in the Cascades. The Bellevue Arts Festival in July, one of the country’s top fine art festivals, was also highlighted as a must-see event.
