Seattle has earned a spot among the nation’s best cities for families, ranking No. 10 overall in WalletHub’s 2026 list of the Best Places to Raise a Family. The annual study compared 182 U.S. cities across 45 indicators of family-friendliness, evaluating everything from housing costs and school quality to safety, recreation opportunities, and economic well-being.
Seattle’s overall score of 65.05 placed it in the top 10 nationwide, alongside cities such as Fremont, California; Overland Park, Kansas; and Irvine, California. The ranking highlights the Emerald City’s strengths in several key areas that matter most to families.
Surprisingly, one of Seattle’s strongest performances came in the category of Affordability, where it ranked fifth nationally. While the city is often associated with a high cost of living, WalletHub’s methodology considers a broader range of factors, including housing affordability relative to income and overall financial conditions for families.
Seattle also excelled in Education & Child Care, earning an impressive eighth-place ranking. Strong schools, access to child care, and educational resources helped position the city among the nation’s leaders in this category.
Seattle’s Socio-economics ranking of 16 further boosted its overall standing. This category measures factors such as employment levels, income distribution, and family stability, suggesting that Seattle offers a relatively strong environment for long-term family success.
Not every category was a standout. Seattle ranked low in two categories: 73rd in Family Fun and 105th in Health & Safety, indicating room for improvement compared with other top-ranked cities. The Family Fun category included metrics such as access to playgrounds and attractions, walkability, and weather. The Health & Safety category looked at air quality, public hospital rankings, driving fatalities, and crime rates, among other metrics.
Despite those challenges, Seattle’s strong performance in education, affordability, and socio-economic measures helped secure its place among the country’s top 10 destinations for families. The results suggest that for households considering a move, Seattle continues to offer a compelling combination of opportunity, resources, and quality of life.
