This giant floating Earth is making its return to Seattle this November! If you missed it last year, you now have another chance to experience Terra, a spectacular 24-foot-wide globe that will hang in the center of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral’s nave. The glowing Earth slowly rotates on its tilted axis, offering a stunning view of our planet. Not only is the free exhibition open to the public, but there are also several events planned throughout the month such as Cathedral Yoga Under the Globe.
Created by Eric Morris of Orbis World Globes, Terra is the largest and most visually realistic world globe of its kind. It features NASA’s iconic Blue Marble satellite imagery, bringing the beauty of Earth into sharp focus. The globe was fabricated by Rainier Industries in Tukwila, Washington. The exhibition is produced by Ben Browner of Revival Gatherings and hosted by Saint Mark’s Cathedral. Note that Saint Mark’s has a policy of diversity and inclusion; all are welcome, regardless of faith.
Morris describes Terra as a “beacon of unity.” The installation invites visitors to experience something similar to the “overview effect,” a profound shift in perspective astronauts often describe after seeing Earth from space. Without visible borders or place names, the planet becomes a reminder of our shared humanity and our connection to the natural world.
